2001
WOMEN, SPIRITUALITY AND YOGA

Report on a Conference from June 14-17 2001 in Marienthal by Inge Friedrich-Rust, Kronberg/Germany

"I am very happy to be here with you, the elite of European women, women with open hearts for spirituality". These were the opening words by Anna Pavlova, a renowned yoga teacher from Sofia, at an unusual conference of women. This conference, calling together women from Eastern and Western Europe around the theme "Women, Spirituality and Yoga" was held in June 2001 in a Cistercian convent of the 13th century at the three-country corner of Germany, Poland and Czech Republic.

This highly spiritual place, which has been a place of prayer and work for Cistercian nuns (Ora et labora!) for nearly 900 years, was well chosen for the gathering of 90 women who came from all corners of the globe, from as far as New Zealand, India and Kazhakstan but particularly from Eastern, Central and Western Europe.
Spirituality that is not tied to any religion or school of thought was the common thread bringing together the women from 22 countries, from a wide variety of religious and professional backgrounds and ranging from 17 to 73 years of age - women coming together to explore the role of spirituality and yoga in their lives, in society and in professional fields such as medicine, psychology, education.

It was a multicultural event and this cultural diversity was the spice giving the gathering the full flavour of lightness and joy, of openness and trust, watering the seeds of honest self exploration and budding friendhsips. An impressive array of professional competencies had assembled - noteworthy was the multiple training and work experiences of many women, ranging from cook to pilot, from mother to physician, from yoga teacher to economist, from therapist to educationalist, to name but a few. The quality of the workshops and events offered was correspondingly high and marked by high standards of professionality, coupled with that spirit of lightness and trust which facilitated the exploration of sensitive issues (such as trauma, sexuality) as well as generating that - often neglected - energy for the quest of which many women had come together.
